Arrows in Menus

I was just doing something in iScrobbler, and a thought occurred to me: Why is it that applications can't figure out in advance on which side a menu is going to open, and place the arrow accordingly?
And my mock up of how Cocoa could do it.
It's only a small visual change, but it would be helpful to know which way a menu is going to open.

July 5, 2008I'd prefer it, if the arrow was on the same side but changed direction to show where the sub menu was going to be.
