Arrows in Menus

I was just doing something in iScrobbler, and a thought occurred to me: Why is it that applications can't figure out in advance on which side a menu is going to open, and place the arrow accordingly?

How it actually looks.

And my mock up of how Cocoa could do it.

It's only a small visual change, but it would be helpful to know which way a menu is going to open.

I'd prefer it, if the arrow was on the same side but changed direction to show where the sub menu was going to be.
